Pharaoh · 1341 BC – 1323 BC

Tutankhamun

Restored the traditional Egyptian gods after the religious upheaval of his father's reign, and — through the spectacular survival of his tomb and treasures — gave the modern world its richest window onto pharaonic Egypt.

Political Achievements

  • Restored the worship of Amun and Egypt's traditional gods abandoned under Akhenaten.
  • Moved the religious capital back from Amarna toward Thebes and Memphis.

Impact Analysis

Though a minor king in his own time, Tutankhamun became, through the survival of his tomb, the single most recognizable figure of ancient Egypt and the public face of Egyptology.
